Networking

What are the benefits of Computer Networking?

In the business environment, the most obvious benefit of computer networking is that you can store virtually any type of information, and retrieve it from, a central location on the network as well as access it from any computer that is connected to that network. This information can be in any format i.e. text, audio, video, photographs, databases etc. Networks also enable you to share resources (printers, data storage devices, software etc) thereby reducing costs and reducing the time spent on managing your c omputer system. A significant advantage of computer networking is the ability to protect access to network resources and files. With properly designed security you can easily control who has access to what on your network both internally and externally. In the Home you may have more than one computer (perhaps a mix of laptops and desktops) ... then networking will allow you to use the same Internet connection as well as share files and printers.

Network Types

Computer networks for the home or small business can be built using either wired or wireless technology. Wired Ethernet has been the traditional choice for many years but wireless technologies are gaining ground fast. Both wired and wireless can claim advantages over each other - both represent viable options for both home and small business users.

Which is better: wired or wireless?

There are many factors that will dictate which is most suitable for your situation, these include:

  • Performance requirements
  • Reliability
  • Existing infrastructure - if there is one
  • Building structure
  • Mobility requirements
  • Budget available
